Good morning readers! Today is my favorite holiday and I won’t let shitty asshole racists take it away from me!
I’m about to land in San Francisco so I can celebrate the 4th with my family, so I only had time for one new doodle (below comic is from 2018!), but I still wanted to share my thoughts going into this year’s “Independence Day.”
I am in no way the first person to share this sentiment, but I really hate that the other side took the flag away from us. I hate how ‘Merica came to represent the stars and stripes and how us liberals love to say “I’m not celebrating the 4th this year because (enter very very long list detailing our current government’s horrifying decisions)!” I refuse to let the scary Republicans decide what America means. We’re a terribly complicated people and I, obviously, have been beyond devastated by what’s been happening to our country, but I want to believe that we’re strong enough to take back our flag. Two weeks ago at Mermaid Parade I saw a group of veterans marching, decked out in mermaid gear with a sign that read Veterans against Fascism and I was like, hell yeah. I think it’s lazy to say that loving our country means you’re not cool. I think we have to continue to love our country and vote for the people who love it, in the right way. Like Zohran, baby! Maybe it’s his win of the democratic primary in New York that’s given me the pep in my step this week, maybe it’s pure delusion. But I just don’t want to give in to this concept that the people who are trying to destroy our country have ownership over what it means to be American. Makes me want to make a shirt that says LIBERALS ARE AMERICAN TOO. But for now I only have the Hot Dogs for Zohran tee!!!!
Ok enough of my patriotic ramblings… here’s my old comic!
Yes! I love this so much!
