As a woman, I know that all women love to tell other women that they got something on sale. It’s the ultimate brag. You like this thing I have on? Well… I got it on sale. You’re jealous aren’t you? You’re jealous of my whole casual chic existence where I just happen to find incredible items on sale at Marshall’s all the time. This reminds me of the first girl I lived in New York with who thought I could help her buy pants at Target because I was “that kind of girl.” Meanwhile, she explained to me, she was “more used to thrifting.” That’s as close as I’ve ever gotten to being slapped in the face.
It being “Black Friday” and all, I decided I’d share with you my cartoons about shopping and then obviously ask you to buy some of my art, on sale of course!
I love the American concept of a sale. A sale is a reason. It’s an excuse! It’s an activity, a holiday, a bonding moment and a conversation starter. And of course, it’s never not exciting.
As a kid, one of my favorite activities with my mom was “Returning something at Marshall’s.” There wasn’t a time in which she didn’t have something to return at Marshall’s. Wednesdays and Fridays when I had half days at school, and she had half days at work, we made our way to Novato to return one a shirt she actually hates and a pair of shorts that don’t fit my brother. Just like my mom, I lived to go to Marshall’s. I can’t imagine how annoying I must’ve been; first begging for a new Lisa Frank velvet coloring set or a daisy patterned headband and eventually turning 16 and always needing a new v-neck sweater. As I would comb through the racks and racks of clothes, touching literally everything, I always made sure to check the tags. Was the sale good enough? Would mom approve of this discount? If it was a good deal, she would sort of shriek and say “Ohmigod that’s so cheap. You have to get it!” And then I would win the game of Marshall’s.
Because the woman loved a sale! Anything to feel like you’re saving money was thrilling, even when of course, you are not saving money. You are in fact, spending money, then going home and telling your husband that you saved money. But it was worth it! It was worth it to take 20 items into the dressing room and realize you hated 18 of them, but you did find a pair of pants that “actually fit you” and that is huge.
I don’t know when “Black Friday” started and I’m not sure I feel like researching that, but I do know I’ve never ever wanted to attend. Marshall’s and Target are a safe space to me. I don’t want to be in there fighting enraged Aunts for a pair of leggings, I want to feel calm. I want to drift through the aisles and know it’s okay to I have a 3 minute mental breakdown if I need to. “Black Friday” appears to take the joy out of shopping, but I do imagine it’s the day of the year that “I got it on sale” is said most around the world.
All this Target and mental breakdown talk has me thinking about my favorite commercial character of all time—Maria Bamford’s Target Lady. This is only one of them, but if you need a pick me up please go google the rest as they are perfect.
As we march into holiday madness and you wonder what to buy for everyone on your list this year, I wanted to offer you my readers a 15% discount on all of my cartoon prints.
