What no one liked, but I did
Every year, like moths to flame, people on the internet post their “most liked” art of the year. The art the algorithm was like, so into. But for me I say… no. I want to review the least liked. The pieces hidden in the corner. The drawings that made me laugh and apparently, no one else. So I give you, the Most Underrated Cartoons of 2024! WILL YOU LIKE ME NOW MR. INTERNET???

It’s hilarious how many emails I get from social media companies that start with “We love your work and noticed how little engagement you’re receiving…” HA! Tell me something I don’t know! I once had about an 80k following on Instagram, but with every passing day it dwindles because… I guess…make enough videos? Honestly I’m not sure. All of this really just reinforces why I’ve shifted the focus of my work to be here on Substack instead of the ol’ bummy-ass IG. It drives me nuts when people do a round up of their “most liked” shit on that app this time of year. It’s simply serving up the same common denominator work that the algorithm already praised them for, to receive a pat on the back yet again. “YES! THUMBS TAPPED A HEART ON THESE THE MOST, WHILE MOST LIKELY BEING IN A BATHROOM!” I try to imagine someone like Nora Ephron having to screenshot one of her essays, add a hyperlink, and try to get her audience to “subscribe to see the full post!” It’s nauseating! I’m not saying I’ll stop posting on there, because to a certain degree I have to, to keep up a resume, essentially, but since I’ve started this newsletter I’ve found myself caring less and less and less about how something is “performing” because it literally never makes any sense to me.
