Welcome back to Pinot Noir, my brand new film club here on Substack where we watch and learn about my favorite film movement/era/style, noir!
For our second film, we will be viewing Charles Vidor’s 1946 classic Gilda starring Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford. What is Gilda actually about other than Rita Hayworth looking incredible? It’s truly… hard to say. When the film was released The New York Times reviewer admitted that he did “not like or understand the movie,” and yet, Gilda remains to be one of the biggest cult classics of all time. That’s what makes it a must watch in my book.
Gilda is the film that left us with that famous line, “Every man I knew, went to bed with Gilda and woke up with me.” No, that is not from the movie, it’s from Rita’s life of being used by men! Words to live by! No???
Where to watch:
Gilda is available for rent on Amazon, Apple TV and Vudu. Also apparently you can get an app called Retro Reels and I think it’s free there? Or if you’re really committed, you can find a VHS copy on eBay.
Come back to discuss!
I’ll start a Subcribers only chat thread tonight at 8 PM EST to discuss the film. Join the conversation whenever is convenient for you! There will be LOTS to say.
As I said last week, the list of films and video portion of my Substack will be free, but if you want to participate in community discussion of the films, that will be for paid subscribers only! Please do consider becoming a paid subscriber because it’s the only thing that validates me!
P.S. If you missed last week, we watched the unforgettable Double Indemnity, and you can still watch it too!
I have never seen this one! Looking forward to it.
FYI I found Gilda on YouTube for free, if that’s useful to others.
