Greetings from my parents house where my mother is vacuuming, my father’s cutting vegetables and the Home Shopping Network is on even though no one likes the Home Shopping Network nor is anyone watching it.
Today I finished up teaching two weeks of summer camps and I’m very tired of putting on a happy face for children!!! Or am I? It’s unclear. I had a lot of different feelings with my students these past two weeks, I was inspired, annoyed, confused, and impressed. I even shed a tear. It’s unclear whether or not they’ll ever remember me, but I would like to think that I’ll remember them. I fully embraced my cooky art teacher persona, danced around the class like no one was there, and forced them to listen to The Eagles. Are you proud or horrified? What is your art teacher personality?
Having been in the suburbs for nearly a month now, I both have so much to say and nothing to say at all. I don’t know if I miss New York or if I just miss my friends (they’re terrible funny!).
There’s a certain malaise that hits you out here. Is it the heat or the errands? Some days it feels that no one is doing anything outside of getting their kid to the park. Every teen I have met wakes up and drives to Starbucks to order anything other than coffee. The only ones getting exercise are the dogs and football players. We all talk about recycling even though we know it’s a lie. I feel like I’m so busy, but it turns out all I did was drive my nephew to Dick’s Sporting Goods and back.
It truly is difficult to stay focused out here, but believe me I’m trying! There’s so much driving it’s, well… it’s driving me insane. I do like driving when I’m on an open highway and scream singing the Dixie Chicks, but when I drive this often I start to feel bloated and terrified.
My biggest revelation thus far has been how I put my outfits together. It truly always includes at least one item I wore to bed the night before, if not more. Sort of a pajama chic situation. If only I had starred in Pillow Talk and not Doris Day!
The one thing my hometown has delivered on (to no one’s surprise) is the wonderful conversation from either my neighbors or complete strangers.
This first toon next here is of course, not a Seen Scene but it might as well have been. The the second is very real. After struggling to walk Margie and Delta together, I realized I could tie two leashes together, wrap it behind my back, and let loose.
The Sonoma Sun did a lovely 2 page spread celebrating my cartoons this week but they sadly did not include this sketch of the the downtown here. Was it simply too real?
More next week! But for now, a list from earlier this year.
Thank you for reading! New posts every Friday!
