It’s been awhile since I did a sketchbook dump and oh boy is there so much stupid silly shit in my notebook!
Let me start off by saying I actually legitimately loved the new season of …And Just Like That, something I didn’t see coming after the horror of season one which I obviously also religiously watched despite cringing the whole way through. What did you think of it?
Apparently summer is “over” but you wouldn’t know it because I’m currently naked in my office just trying to survive this humidity. Though summer is officially over for our three celebrity deaths of recent": Pee Wee, Smash Mouth, and Jimmy Buffet. It’s almost like the 90s have died (though we know of course, they have in no way died and are in fact thriving at H&M.)
My summer was one of those real manic ones that included ending a long term relationship and stepping into a new one. I like to live life on the edge, clearly! Alas, I cannot control the ways of the world, so I find myself flipping through a sketchbook that reads like a bad romance novel.
I would say I’m looking forward to Fall but that means Winter is coming and as my cousin Sophie so aptly said this weekend over aperol spritzs, “The older I get, the less winter I can tolerate.” IT’S A VIBE!
This summer for me was also marked by a very large amount of me sitting in the sun painting pet portraits, next to vintage shops that make me emotionally weak. The Greenpointers Summer Market closed at the end of August, I had a friggin great time sweating there every weekend (not lying!!)—meeting some cute ass dogs and finding an extremely cool vintage Coca-Cola rain jacket from Stone Ponies Vintage. Does vintage also make you weak? I truly cannot allow myself to walk into Awoke more than once a month and even that is too much!
While Greenpointers won’t have any markets again until the Holidays, there are two chances (so far) this Fall to come find me for a portrait of your puppy. On September 23rd I’ll be at the Rain or Shine Rescue Fundraiser from 3-6 PM on Hudson & Morton Street, then on October 22nd I’ll be at the Eastern Barkway Dog Halloween party at 722 Franklin Ave from 1-4 PM!
If I wasn’t painting dogs this summer, I was in the suburbs! And not even just ONE suburb… several of them! Between California and the St. Nell’s residency in Pennsylvania, I have really gotten my fill of small town energy the past few months. I am no closer to ever being able to own a home, but I do have a lot of jokes on the subject.
While I was in Sonoma my brother texted me, “Does your boyfriend want to come see the backyard?” I knew exactly what he wanted to do. He wanted to talk about his remodel. He was desperate for someone to notice how much planning it required of him to take out a tree and replace it with turf, and how much that was going to save him in water bills. I cackled and thought of responding, “LOL NO,” but because I love him, instead I wrote, “Maybe later!” Suburbans (the people, not the car!) yearn to tell you about their remodel. And I get it, I’m sure one day when I remodel a home… oh wait… no that’ll never happen.
Though it’s been horribly sweaty to be back in New York, I’m very glad to be here! I love being tucked away in my office, with the sounds of Law & Order in the background, Margie at my feet and me, having a panic attack at my desk. Something so cozy about it!
Ok the rest of my sketches are both random and topical:
I saw the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and LOVED IT, and then tried to think of a daily cartoon for The New Yorker about it, but it was so bad.
Cat Cohen had a stroke and I am so fucking happy she’s ok
I’ve been trying to think of a reverse “dog cafe” joke but it’s not that great
The adderall shortage!
Spooky season is almost upon us… and so is my past :)
A whole new definition of “raw-dogging” from my friend Jordan
And then… this stuff… no explanation…
And finally, a list!
P.S. The next Real Live Girls is September 16th at pinkFrog cafe in Williamsburg!!! COME THRU!

Literal LOL at "When do we sleep?"
So much covered in this post I could barely keep up but lived being in the NY vibe for a moment. Thank you for sharing! I hope your brother’s tree will survive. Trees give shade and bring happiness. Turf is just pretty.
