It’s my favorite time of year, every four years… the winter olympics!! The time people who normally despise sports, are like, suddenly into it? Myself including! I don’t identify with the Super Bowl but I do identify with ice skaters who fall after working years on their craft.
I even got a temporary Peacock subscription to watch the events!! (Wow… she’s committed). I must admit that don’t understand half of the winter olympics, though. What is that weird shuffleboard thing? What fucking drunk guy in Canada came up with that? I do think most sports were invented by drunk people.
I met Robin Williams when I was a kid and my main thought was “he is hairy and sweaty.” I wish he was still with us! I miss his humor so much. It’s nice that they renamed the tunnel leaving San Francisco the Robin Williams tunnel. When I was young it was the rainbow tunnel and probably the only time I did that classic game every kid is obligated to do, hold your breath. What is that about? Why do we want to hold our breaths? Feels sexual.
I don’t know what comes after “parent” in my eras list. Perhaps one day I will and I’ll update this list. What would you add? Also is anyone else always avoiding getting their hands wet? Am I disgusting? (I already know I am!)
I’ve really missed doing Seen Scenes every week. I keep thinking I’ll be able to restart the series, but I truly just don’t get out enough like I used to (ok depressing!!). But I did see a lot on my birthday, so here’s a special version of…
It was a surprisingly magical day!! I even got to eat like a kid (for years I’ve told everyone if I ever get married, I’m serving McDonalds at my wedding).
My favorite conversation I had on my birthday was amongst friends at the iconic Margaritaville located in what Kelsey refers to as “our nation’s capital, Times Square!!” You MUST go. The top floor bar has a gorgeous view of the city!! Though I must warn you.. their signature cocktails have some insane sugary syrup in them that will make you ill. I know this is not surprising but I feel it’s my duty to share this. I suggest ordering a more classic drink! Perhaps a whiskey soda? Or dare I say… a martini?
I honestly didn’t know that the idea of the teenager was that new! It makes sense now when I think about it. All the MGM films of the 50s were defining the idea of the teen. You don’t see much of that in 30s and 40s films. You’re either a kid or you’re married or you’re trying to get married. Last night I saw a musical on TCM I’d never heard of called My Sister Eileen. It was actually quite cute. The story follows two sisters moving to New York from Ohio and they’re of course, way too innocent to be in the East Village. One wants to be an actress, one, a writer. One is hot, one is not. But they both find love <3 Often when you see one of these forgotten musicals, they’re forgotten for a reason. But I loved a lot of the numbers, and Ben Mankiewicz taught me that the story actually had this wild evolution where it started off as short stories in The New Yorker in the 30s or 40s, then became a book, then became a Broadway play, then became a Hollywood movie, then became a Hollywood musical. And we think Hollywood is only doing remakes today?! I guess it’s nothing new! I always say, when you have a good idea, beat it death!
I don’t say that but I could start now.
Here’s a recent list:

Have you read Murder Book? I’d love to hear from you!
I regret to inform you that there are 2 "cool kid" phases, and "annoying kid" is sandwiched between them.
Your newsletter always brings me smiles. I gave Murder Book to four friends and my sister for xmas and they all LOVED it. It got me started on true crime, I read I'll Be Gone In The Dark and watched the movie and also watched the doc about Ted Bundy who I never really knew about. It was all stunningly scary. I think I can't continue to read more true crime as those terrified me so much!!!!
