Just finished watching. I can’t believe I’ve never seen this film before. So much triangulation in this film... every little group of three has so much tension! Now that I think of it, I guess that’s been there in all four of the films we’ve looked at. Hmmm...
What did you think of Poor Bessie? I feel sorriest for her. Authentic, proud, so in love with Laura. But I guess she probably gets to hang on... as her maid. 😣
And I loved the clocks!
What do we think of Lydecker? I was intrigued by his disdain for “earthy” love. Especially after the first bath scene and his general “foolishness,” which I think coded him as gay. Sort of like Joel Cairo. Did he really love Laura? Or just want her as another of his valuable possessions?
I’m so glad I could introduce you to this movie!! It’s really one of the bests out there. I personally am of the belief that Lydecker saw Laura as an object, as you say, something to possess and have ownership over. However if they remade this movie today I think they would shift the storyline to be that Laura was Lydecker’s beard which made him furious to lose her / therefore to lose his cover up that gave him better social standing.
Can’t wait! I met Vincent Price in 1976 after he performed in a play I attended. I remember being stunned at how tall he was. And so very kind. I was a kid and he engaged me in a lovely conversation.
One of my great memories. Roddy McDowall was there too. I was the only “fan” waiting by the theatre doors… I was 12. My wonderful parents stood in the distance while I waited and hoped. The two actors came out together and I managed to actually speak words. And they both signed my program!
This reminds me of the day I met Leonardo DiCaprio. We had like a full on back and forth convo outside of a theater in Santa Barbara and I was in such disbelief that it was happening and that words were successfully coming out of my mouth

Great film! Curious what others think.

Omg of course! What a wonderful memory?? What was the play?
Charley’s Aunt. At the DuPont Grand Hotel in Wilmington, Delaware!
Funny what we remember. Such a joy.

Yes!!! Or when you met Kelsey Grammer. One is so grateful later that one uttered actual words.
I love this movie.
One of the reasons I've never been a huge fan of Vincent Price's horror movies is because movies like Laura show what a great actor he was.
As for Bessie, faithful servant adoring master/mistress isn't sexual to me. It's a comic trope going back awhile.
Do you think Alfred is secretly lusting after Bruce Wayne?
Ok but what IF Alfred listed after Bruce Wayne!!?? Wouldn’t that be fun to imagine....
Icky.
Think of the age difference.
